Description
To overcome the literacy barrier, WhatsApp’s No-Text User Guides were designed to be understood without needing to be read. The No-Text User Guides were crafted for hyperlocal use and to fit seamlessly into the daily lives of migrant labourers. They were painted onto multiple canters going about their regular routes racking up visibility across thousands of kilometres. Gunny bags, which is what migrant labourers [farmers, construction workers] work the most with, were stamp printed using artisanal techniques and distributed widely. Wall paintings in remote villages ensured the families of migrant labourers were also reached. The canters traversed over 2,500 kilometres, reaching over 240 villages and garnering over 104,000 eyeballs that otherwise wouldn’t have been reached. The gunny bags made their way into local mandis [bazaars]. The painted walls were seen by over 28,000 people in rural India.
