Time & Space, a cultural research project, traces the evolution of Taste through 4 Indian motifs—borrowed, appropriated & aestheticized from ordinary to extra-ordinary. It supplements an anthology of literary essays on Taste. One motif is bandhani, a resist-dye craft dating to the Ajanta caves. We created a sub-identity for Time+Space through a modular typeface, translated into bandhani with indigo dye by craftsmen in Bhuj. A Taste bandana—an American take on bandhana—was gifted with the limited edition book. Taste is amorphous, open to interpretation & evolution, as are the bandhani letterforms. Modular & drawn on a grid (considering seed size knotted & distance between knots), geometric letterforms become amorphous, fluid & unique to each hand that makes them. The silk bandhani bandana, in its imperfections, exemplifies the essay's essence—Taste is personal, triggered by desire, taking, borrowing & crossing over—here, a collaboration between an urban studio & a rural craft cluster.
