Parrot Cabaret transforms mechanics from something children see in diagrams into something they can physically experience. Designed for a mixed-age public audience, the installation makes abstract ideas such as mechanical advantage intuitive through play, repetition and observation without relying on instruction. Three weightlifting parrots turn classic mechanisms into memorable learning experiences: a Scotch yoke and cam drive a bench press, a lever mechanism powers a pull-up, and gears, chains and a slider-crank animate a shoulder press. Every mechanism remains exposed, allowing learners to operate, observe and connect their own input to the resulting motion. The playful metaphor of a parrot “repeating” movement mirrors how mechanisms repeat motion, turning humour into a tool for understanding and recall. With 10,000+ visitors and 26,000+ recorded interactions, Parrot Cabaret demonstrates how embodied, self-directed learning can make STEM concepts tangible, engaging and memorable.
