Description
1 in 5 Indian school children suffer from blurry vision. Parents often believe vision problems only come with age and so don't prioritise regular eye checkups. In a regions where children weren't being taken for eye tests, we devised a way to take the test directly to them. Inspired by an ancient method used to test hunters’ eyesight using the stars, we created the Ek Tara Test. A glow-in-the-dark star spotting aid that turned the simple act of stargazing into vision screening. The Ek Tara Project directly targeted children at vision risk by distributing the Ek Tara Tests in 140+ schools across 25 towns in India. We got direct responses from kids who needed help and they were given a complete eye test by our optometrists, for free. Through India’s largest children’s comic publication, Tinkle, the Ek Tara Test was made accessible to over 1.2 million children directly to their homes. It was also available online via direct mail at a negligible price of just Rupee 1 (approx. 1 cent).
