The Cubbon Park book brings together a cross-section of people connected to one of Bangalore’s oldest parks in different ways. Together, the interviews explore the park’s cultural, ecological and historical significance and its role as a public space. The book’s design uses map-making as its typology, asking: “What is a city and how do we draw it?” Working with a team of cartographers, we developed a master map that layered historical maps with new cartographic information, including the park’s hydrological networks. The map operates at two scales: a macro view of the park and its urban surroundings, and a series of detailed maps introducing each interview. The interviews are organised around three themes—Botanising, Politics and Art—subtly embedded within the maps as background patterns. A French-fold dust jacket reveals a surprise poster: the complete park map, printed using four process and three spot inks.
