The clean energy transition is well underway, with many countries switching to renewable energy sources. When procuring energy to meet climate commitments, they must do so sustainably by considering its source, and impact on local ecosystems. This project by Climate Group, in partnership with Responsible Energy Initiative India, guides prospective buyers of renewable energy towards sustainable practices. We began with a series of actions that buyers may take to procure renewable energy responsibly and mapped it to a traditional roadmap in increasing order of ambition. But we wanted it to be something more engaging than a simple assessment tool. The final direction, a sunburst chart, frames the roadmap as a ‘Compass of Responsibility’ whose outer segments represent individual actions that a buyer can take. As they mark them complete, new sections with more ambitious next steps reveal themselves, allowing us to gamify the framework while retaining credibility of the subject matter.
