Description
Luru is a magazine about Bengaluru. Issue 03: The Games We Play considers ‘play’ through various lenses, not limited to ‘games’ or ‘sports’ in a literal sense, exploring power, identity, and human connection in the city. Design and editorial choices committed to playing with ‘play’ at every level, covering themes such as medical clowning, sports tragedy, dog shows, and personal struggle with identity. Design choices were tailored to the theme and style of each article, and the magazine was punctuated with literal games—scannimations—that were both fun and relevant to the section of the magazine they appeared in. With the idea of ‘play’ at its core, the magazine’s design uses print craft, tactile elements, and bold visual storytelling to create an immersive microcosm of the ‘the games we play’ in Bengaluru. The cover (by Madhav Nair)—inspired by a Monopoly board—feels like an improvised boardgame with characters from the magazine, with a nod to the isometric style of many videogames.
